Well, our town was under voluntary evacuation yesterday since Hurricane Ike looked to be heading straight to Port Lavaca, which is about an hour from us. I live in what is considered the coastal plain of Texas, so any large they thought that the surge, tornadoes spinning off, and flash flooding, along with the winds would affect the whole area. Of course we evacuated two years ago with Hurricane Rita too, and it went much farther north than originally expected.
The girls are of course thrilled that school has closed for Thursday and Friday, and we all decided to just head to Austin to my sister's and make a fun weekend out of it. We left this morning around 7:00 am, after I spent yesterday getting my house storm ready. the traffic was not bad at all, but I avoided all interstates, and of course I don't have to deal with the problems of getting out of Houston. I have a feeling it won't be nearly as bad as two years ago when Houston evacuated for Rita, but as we drove past I-10 it was definitely more congested than a typical Thursday morning, as some people get an early jump on leaving.
I am blessed that I had an easy trek out, and now I anxiously await what kind of damage this storm will bring. Good Luck all of you who have decided to stay and hope for the best!
